res liFe Shining the Spotlight on Sophomores by Luke LaCroix Shaping the second-year experience is just as critical as shaping the first-year one. Think of a sophomore as the stereotypical middle child: growing up in the shadow of an older sibling’s achievements, resenting the spotlight now shining on the younger sibling, and perhaps reacting by carving out a quiet and unobtrusive space in the background. In an effort to bring these students out of the shadow, higher education institutions are allocating more and more resources to enriching the second-year experience. Sophomores are at a critical point in both their college careers and their personal development. They need resources to help them outline academic and career goals, stay connected with their peers, and gain experience in leadership and civic engagement. Shannon Finning-Kwoka, interim director of new student and sophomore-year programs at Clemson University in South Carolina, emphasizes the importance of tailoring programs specifically to this group. “Secondyear students need a different type of connection to campus as compared to their first-year experience, and institutions should continue to treat the second-year student as a special cohort,” she says. Second-year students benefit, as all students do, from a consistent connection with faculty and professional staff as these students explore leadership responsibilities, find purpose and/or continued interest in fulfilling general education requirements, experience ongoing self-exploration, and begin to build a substantive roadmap toward their career goals. Utilizing established resources to help meet their needs can strengthen the relationship between student affairs and academic affairs – and may even help second-year students feel extraordinary. According to Karen Coburn and Madge Treeger in Letting Go: A Parent’s Guide to Understanding the College Years, the critical issue in a student’s second year is developing a sense of meaning and purpose in regard to one’s education, career, and life goals.
