a World of difference ref lecT i o ns The study tour was an incredible experience shared with a great bunch of like minded housing professionals. As a result the benefit gained was far more than simply what was seen, heard, and experienced during our nine days in China. China, in the oft used word of many of my American companions (I am a Brit) was … AWESOME! There are many things that I brought back from the tour and too many for inclusion in the few lines requested for this article. The overriding one was the realisation that my team and I, as providers of accommodation and related services to what is already an important market for the University of Edinburgh, knew far from enough about our potential customers. And if we do not properly understand our customers, their cultural backgrounds, their experiences through the Chinese higher education sector in this case, and critically what they actually expect of us when they come to the West then how on earth can we provide them with the most positive experience whilst in our care? I now realise also that this is not just a problem when recruiting from China. So discussions with our international office have already started with a view to gaining far greater information on the needs of our future customers and talking with them far more. We are finding ways of delivering information and messages to overseas students more appropriately. We may not always be able to provide all that they would like, but we can move in that direction where possible but at the same time manage expectation far more effectively. Some of the photos in this article show accommodation that is far different than what we are used to providing our students. In China there are very good reasons why it appears that this is not particularly an issue for most Chinese students. They have usually only experienced a very communal style of living throughout their time in higher education, and there are now understandable concerns for many when coming to the West where we often offer something quite different, especially to graduate students. Therefore, another positive action that prior to this trip we would never have considered has been providing more shared accommodation for postgraduates. This type of accommodation also has the advantage of being available at a far lower cost to students. Future plans are already being adapted to provide an increased range including such options for students. India next, please!!
