institutions Compete against Hazing A new award was announced at the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) annual conference in March 2009 that will strengthen the battle against campus hazing. The Zeta Tau Alpha Award for Innovation in Hazing Prevention and Education, created through the collaborative efforts of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity for women, the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation, Inc., and HazingPrevention.Org, will annually award one college or university $10,000 for its innovative, comprehensive, year-round hazing prevention programming focusing on education and effective intervention efforts. The award is based upon criteria established by the U.S. Department of Education’s Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Use and Violence Prevention. Associate Center Director Linda Langford will be the featured speaker at the Interdisciplinary Institute for Hazing Intervention, which will take place June 13-19 at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Attendees will receive assistance in developing hazing prevention programming based on the principles of the award. The first Zeta Tau Alpha Award for Innovation in Hazing Prevention and Education will be given at the NASPA annual conference in March 2010. Award applications are due November 15, 2009. RLPA Update The Residence Life Professional Association held its annual general meeting in March at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. There they announced their new leadership for the current year: Dima Utgoff, University of Alberta, is now their president; Tim Siemen, Red Deer College in Alberta, is their president-elect; Mark Keller, University of Calgary in Alberta, is their secretary; and Brett Phillips, University of Alberta, was elected to a newly created position as communications coordinator. Awards were presented at the meeting as well. Brett Phillips, University of Alberta, received the RLPA New Professional Award, and Janet Athanasiou, University of Alberta-Augustana, received their highest award, the RLPA Josie Lamothe Award. This award is given to a professional staff member for their outstanding contributions to student service. Their fall general meeting will be in November at Lakeland College in Alberta, Canada.
