First takes member wins 200 cornerstone award Connexion Technology, a fiber-optic amenity company located in Cary, North Carolina, has won the 2009 Cornerstone Award for its contribution to the growth and innovation of Fiber to the Home (FTTH) delivery. Particularly, their use of Corning® ClearCurve® optical fiber not only caught the judges’ eyes, but it has taken their business far this year with its ability to retrofit fiber in existing communities. “This solution has enabled us to seamlessly integrate our services on a common IP platform,” says Dan Waugh, director of new product introduction, in a press release. “We can maintain quality, lower costs, and dramatically increase the speed of deployment.” For more information, visit www.connexion technologies.net. gROunD breakin gs THE UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS Fort Wayne, Indiana Projected Opening: August 2009 • Cost: $7 million Clare Hall will have suite-style units, each with two bedrooms connected by a bathroom. The 42,000-square-foot, three-story building is being constructed by Design Collaborative Inc. and will accommodate a total of 150 students. The hall will also contain lounges, study rooms, a computer lab, and laundry facilities and will be connected to another residence hall through an atrium. ST. NORBERT COLLEGE De Pere, Wisconsin Projected Opening: August 2009 • Cost: Not available The new apartment-style complex, named Gries Hall and constructed by Performa Inc., will house 144 upperclassmen. Each floor of the three stories will be made up of 12 four-person apartments, and each apartment will include a kitchen, bathroom, living area, and vanity space for each person. The hall will also feature lounge areas, laundry facilities, and an exercise space. The college is combating privacy concerns about surrounding homes by including an 8-foot fence, a berm, and many trees. ALFRED UNIVERSITY Alfred, New York Projected Opening: August 2009 • Cost: Not released Forty-eight students will live in the 15,000-square-foot, three-story building, named Ann’s House and built by HBT Architects. There will be a shared bathroom and vestibule area for every two bedrooms, as well as a combined kitchen/laundry area on the first floor. The hall will attain Silver LEED certification, due in part to its solar panel roof, high-efficiency heating system, Low-E thermopane windows, soy-based foam insulation, energy-efficient lighting, and a heat-recovery system on exhaust fans. Also, the insulation will be applied to exterior walls, rather than between the studs, making the building more efficient to heat and more air tight. SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY Cape Girardeau, Missouri Projected Opening: August 2009 • Cost: $23.7 million The 82,000-square-foot, L-shaped hall will provide housing for 306 students in suite-style double occupancy rooms connected by shared bathrooms. Constructed by KAI Design and Building, it will include multiple small living rooms, a large game room, a laundry room, a hearth room, study lounges on each floor, and a dining hall on the first floor. The building will also house a locker room for the football and soccer programs. The security system features ID access into the foyers, elevators, and floors and records time of entry when accessed. A number of learning communities will be housed on the floors, such as business, construction management and interior design, and visual and performing arts. July + auguST 2009 Swanstone Sees More Green The Swan Corporation, maker of Swanstone kitchen and bath products and surfaces in St. Louis, Missouri, has announced that their goods will now be offered in four new earth-friendly colors that contain up to 39 percent recycled content and 4 to 6 percent rapidly renewable materials. Called the “Our Planet Collection,” the products will be available in white, tan, brown, or gray, and they can contribute to multiple LEED credits in the materials and resources category.
