JUST IN SPOTLIGHT New York University New York City, New York Name: Founders Hall Opened: August 2009 Architect: Perkins Eastman New York City can be a tricky place to build a residence hall, much less create a safe, peaceful community for new freshmen in the middle of the city. New York University has risen to the challenge with their new Founders Hall, a 26-ﬂoor high-rise tower that houses over 700 freshmen in 212 rooms. When NYU ofﬁcials decided on the location for the new residence hall, there was only one barrier: St. Ann’s church, a city landmark built in 1847, was right in the middle of the construction site. So they decided to include it as an architectural feature of the building’s entrance. This façade, along with the view of the city, the landscaped front and rear terraces, and the courtyard, make this a unique building amid the bustle of the city. Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Ellett believes that these will be features well appreciated by the residents: “In New York City, you don’t get much outdoor space like this.” However, the elements of the community do not stop there. The 24-hour security-patrolled building, which provides students with twobedroom suites with two to four students per suite, also includes a computer room and a number of lounges that host various programs throughout the year. These events are often planned and implemented by the Faculty Fellow in Residence Lisa Stulberg, who along with her other responsibilities leads a book club in the hall. NYU has 18 faculty fellows total. “They’re expected to establish an intellectual presence, present research, and provide activities for the residents,” says Kate Baier, director of residential education. “The ﬁrst-year students are very receptive to this program.” Each of NYU’s 24 residence halls has a broad concept; for Founders Hall, it is “public interest.” This focus is evident in a number of themed living/learning hallways, including “The Green Apple,” a sustainability-focused community; “NYU C.O.R.P.S.,” a service-based community; and a politics learning community. Despite the challenges of supporting residence life in a major city, the beneﬁt of being in New York City is the opportunity to create an educational living experience like no other. TALKING STICK
