Running On
It all began in 1979 at the University of Vermont in Burlington. That was the ﬁrst year of the ACUHO-I Fun Run. In the beginning, it was considered a serious race, but over the years it has taken on a more relaxed tone and has grown to embrace the walking and rollerblading crazes. However, one constant through the evolution of this event was co-founder John Johnson. He passed away in October 2008, and the event has since been renamed the ACUHO-I John Johnson/T.O. Allan Fun Run, Walk, and Roll to honor the commitment of these two individuals to the run. “John Johnson was an avid runner, and he encouraged all to participate and embrace the sport as he did,” says Chuck Lamb, director of residence life at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. “And it wasn’t an easy embrace; John could sell snow cones to penguins in a winter storm, and he was evangelical about the beneﬁts of running and had a plan for training and exercise tips that he wanted to share with anyone who would listen. The only down side is he wore some of the ugliest running shorts ever invented!” “I think the best thing to come out of this is the many, many people who got started, after participating in one of the runs, on some sort of a physical regimen that has literally changed their lives for the better,” says co-founder T.O. Allan. It has been estimated that over 3,700 fun run t-shirts have been given out in the past 30 years. ACUHO-I Journal Adds Resources
The latest edition of the ACUHO-I Journal of College & University Student Housing was delivered last month and, with it, came a number of changes. The ﬁrst, and most noticeable, difference is the size. ACUHO-I traditionally has published two issues a year. Now, both a special focus issue and a “traditional” issue are bound and delivered together, reducing both printing and postage costs for the association without reducing the amount of information delivered to the membership. The second change is that the Journal now will be delivered in electronic format as well as in print. Utilizing the same Nxtbook format as the digital Talking Stick, the Journal will be available online to everyone at member institutions. A link to the latest issue is available on the ACUHO-I Web site and through the online library. The third change is the addition of discussion questions at the end of each article. These insightful questions will be a valuable resource for faculty members to utilize in their classes or for supervisors who use the publication as a professional development tool. Finally, the two issues mark the end of Phyllis McCluskeyTitus’ term as the Journal’s editor. Beginning in June that post will be held by Dr. Von Stange, assistant vice president and director of university housing and dining at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Currently an associate editor, he will oversee the publication for a three-year term.
