Name: North Quadrangle Residential and Academic Complex Opened: September 2010 • Cost: $175 million Architect: Robert A. M. Stern Associates (design); Einhorn Yaffee Prescott Architecture & Engineering (executive architect) The North Quadrangle Residential and Academic Complex – or North Quad as everyone is already calling it – is the first new residence hall on the Michigan campus in more than 40 years. With its attractive combination of living quarters for 450 students, classrooms, dining center, advanced technology, and immersive learning programs, it is shaping up to be well worth the wait. Intended for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, the hall comprises single and suite-style rooms outfitted with sofas and coffee tables and featuring semi-private bathrooms. Lounges are included on each of the 10 stories of the residential tower, while a larger lounge, designed for community programs, tops it. The building offers seating for 180 diners as well as a retail food outlet. The lobby is open and inviting with comfortable chairs and tables. Also, while students have the chance to gather their mail and mingle, the student staff members are free to roam rather than being trapped behind a desk. Instead they will be provided with laptops. For all the features (wireless Internet, copy-cam whiteboards, video conferencing, digital signs, and much more), aesthetic accomplishments (Collegiate Gothic with gabled metal roofs), and sustainability features (constructed to be 30 percent more energy efficient than state code requires), it is the integrated education programs that have many excited. Along with the living space, the complex includes offices for the School of Information, Communication Studies, and Screen Arts and Cultures and is also home to the Global Scholars Program and the longstanding Max Kade German Program. These programs instruct in language and culture, utilize technology to connect with other classrooms around the world, and teach how to better resolve issues through dialogue. The North Quad program coordinator is tasked with developing events and programs for the students as well as coordinating opportunities to link residence hall programs with those
originating in academic programs and vice versa. This emphasis even extends to the dining hall, which will adjust its menu to complement different international programs. “The programs in North Quad take full advantage of the campus’ students and faculty,” says Director of University Housing Linda Newman, “and works toward our university president’s vision of helping create complete global citizens.”
