The Earthship Has Landed

Denison’s Homestead students share dinners, gardening duties, and maintenance work around the cabins.
In spring 2010, students at Denison University’s Homestead community welcomed the opening of Cabin Phoenix, a new living space for their 10-acre community located near the university campus in Granville, Ohio, about an hour east of Columbus. Cabin Phoenix is an earthship-style structure, a type of energy-efficient house made of used truck tires packed tightly with mud, which are then stacked and molded together. Internal walls are made of used cans suspended in concrete. Students living on the Homestead (called Homesteaders) laboriously constructed Cabin Phoenix themselves. To work properly, the tires must be densely filled with
mud. The process usually involves two people; one scoops mud into the tire, and the other uses a sledgehammer to ram the mud into the crevices. Once properly”earth-rammed,” the tire can weigh several hundred pounds. While the materials are cheap and earth-friendly, the labor is grueling. “It was a lot of hard work,” says Homestead Advisory Board Chair Dr. Linda Krumholz, in a slight understatement. The Homestead’s legacy, however, is not to do what is easy – it is a legacy of experimentation and innovation. Established in 1977 by Denison professor Dr. Bob Alrutz and a group of students, the goal was a selfsustaining community governed by democratic
