new professionals talk about their first year on the job in student housing and offer advice
tudent housing prides itself on the fact that its staff enjoy a variety of experiences in a diverse work environment that allows not only for professional development but also contributes to the learning experience of students. This sense of fit with the job and competence in the field may not be something that a new professional will, however, feel right away. One experience that all collegiate housing professionals share is navigating their first year on the job. Creating a professional identity involves more than fulfilling the job requirements; new professionals must also understand the institutional culture and campus politics, develop professional connections and personal relationships, establish boundaries with students, translate theory into practice, and take advantage of the opportunities for professional development.
New professionals leave their graduate programs excited to enter into the field of student affairs. They arrive ready to explore their new institution from a different perspective, first as an eager applicant and then as a newly hired employee. However, adjusting to the job is only one step. They must also adjust to the institutional culture and politics; in short, they must decipher what it means to be a newly hired professional in the broader context of their department and their institution.
