fangs for Watching
Apparently North Carolinians love vampires about as much as they love their basketball. The proof is that the HBO original series “True Blood” receives its highest rankings in the United States in Greensboro, North Carolina. The show’s popularity there is credited to Greensboro’s large college student population, a key demographic for the show. Four of the seven Greensboro area colleges and universities – University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Wake Forest University, High Point University, and Elon University – are HBO bulk customers via Time Warner Cable. For the season finale of “True Blood” last September, HBO and Time Warner hosted a special screening at the Carolina Theatre to thank the students and community for their support. Area students were invited, and the student body and Greek Life presidents from the four universities that are HBO bulk customers received VIP invitations. Special appearances were made by the show’s stars Kristen Bauer (Pam De Beaufort), Kevin Alejandro (Jesus Velasquez), and Todd Lowe (Terry Bellefleur). The jam-packed event drew hundreds of students waiting to catch a glimpse of the stars as they entered the theater. The crowd turned the street into “a gothic kind of pep rally,” according to the Greensboro News & Record, as many of the students wore series-appropriate costumes.
