Name: The Gardens Opened: August 3, 2010 Cost: $35.5 million Architect: SHW Group Phase 1 of The Gardens, the first new campus residences since 1986, is a complex of 250 apartment units which offer one- and twobedroom floor plans and a total of 428 beds. Each unit includes complete furnishings, a kitchen, and walk-in closets. The complex offers amenities such as satellite television, high speed internet, 24/7 on-call maintenance, laundry facilities, convenient parking, and multiple bus stops throughout the complex. Students can also apply for premium units which include a patio, storage area, and a washer and dryer. The complex also includes an apartment for the resident manager, a staff office, an activity shelter, and a community center that offers a computer lab, wireless access, a video library, lounges, a kitchen, and meeting rooms. The apartments primarily serve graduate, married, and international students, but any upper-division students are also eligible to live there. “These apartments will help the university meet our Vision 2020 goal of enhancing the graduate student experience,” says Associate Director of Residence Life Mike Krenz. “They will also allow upper-division undergraduate students another on-campus living option that does not currently exist for undergraduates — apartment living. We are excited about the possibilities of graduate students, families, and undergraduate students all living and learning together. The experience so far has been nothing but positive.” A dedication ceremony for Phase 1 of The Gardens was held on September 17, 2010. Plans for Phase 2 have been approved, and it is expected to open in August 2011. Phase 2 will have 168 apartments (276 beds), an activity building, and a children’s playground.
