Does Moving Bricks Make Memories Crumble?
By Luke LaCroix

Many institutions reveal that plans for demolishing old residence halls can be welcomed by both students and alumni when plans are made transparent.

Making the decision to raze a residence hall requires consideration of several factors such as the state of its physical structure, its level of use, and whether or not it can support current technological needs. What may not be considered, but should be, is the building’s emotional resonance. It’s easy to say that the residence hall is just a building, a physical structure that has reached the end of its life cycle. But to its present and past residents, it is also a home, filled with the breath of community life, the comforting enclosures of a personal space, and the echoes of positive memories. Many colleges and universities are trying to be sensitive to these emotional associations by opening their lines of communication and keeping their actions transparent so that students, alumni, and other campus partners understand the decision to raze an old building. The decision to demolish rather than to renovate a residence hall is generally made when the physical structure can no longer serve the current population, the building no

longer supports the academic mission of the institution or the needs of future students, or the cost of renovation is prohibitive. The decision is never a simple or easy one, though. As part of their presentation “Lifecycle Maintenance and Budgeting” at the 2010 ACUHO-I/APPA Housing Facilities Conference, Steve Waller (director of residential life at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge) and Mark Hill (assistant director of housing for facilities at the University of Florida in Gainesville) noted how analysis of a building’s life cycle is only one small part of the decision. As they explained, even though the life cycle of a residence hall is known from the pro forma design phase, not all campuses can replace the buildings according to those timelines. In addition, other mitigating factors must be taken into account: the financial health of the institution and its propensity for debt, institutional expectations and requirements, and how well the campus construction master plan considers the student population.
