For students living in campus housing, the stresses of roommates and the distance from home can sometimes become overwhelming. When these problems emerge, it is the housing staff who steps in to help by creating a warm, friendly environment in residence halls. From planning engaging social events to promoting positive relationships, the staff work to smooth the student transition into life on a college campus. Hindered by financial restraints, many institutions find it difficult to provide enough professional development programs and to show their appreciation for each of these dedicated employees. Nevertheless, several institutions have found some creative ways to initiate affordable programs and reward systems for their staff.
At the University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign, housing staff have become the voices directly behind their training and development programs. “Most of our T & D programs are presented by in-house staff to keep costs down as well as to provide professional development opportunities for our staff to present and facilitate,” says Patricia Anton, assistant director of housing. While many of these training sessions focus on topics such as computer skills and personal finances, the university also places emphasis on the health and wellness of their housing staff by sponsoring “Biggest Loser” competitions and stress management programs. “Our staff asks for these programs on a regular basis,” notes Anton. “Many are optional, as these integrate
