Starting from Scratch

A site plan for student housing embraces future planned development.
Over the last decade, as the baby boomlet of 18-year-olds entered the nation’s higher education campuses, the expectations of students, parents, and college and university leaders have evolved to include a desire for more academically and socially rich residential environments. With housing in demand on many campuses, several institutions are embarking on housing development projects, in some cases creating whole new campus districts from scratch. These large residence hall projects can truly improve, revitalize, and expand campuses for the creation of a greater whole. With new and meaningful open spaces, a dynamic mix of uses, and an increasingly diverse population of students, faculty, and retailers, these projects are creating new

centers of gravity and are drivers for future development.
A Master Plan for Student Housing
Recently, two New Jersey campuses developed unique responses to today’s student housing initiatives. At the Livingston campus of Rutgers University and at Montclair State University, projects were launched to solve the problem of a shortage of thousands of beds. These projects incorporate many buildings into a site design concept that will not only serve as a catalyst for future campus growth but will also reinforce the most important goals of their respective master plans: creating well-defined spaces that offer a distinct sense of place and are conducive
