FACILITIES
On a new project, careful study of proportion, spatial relationship, solar orientation, and building height can result in open spaces that maximize comfort within the area, create communities, and provide room for recreation, study, socialization, and special events. At Rutgers, a series of academic areas on the ground floor of the new buildings have corresponding outdoor learning spaces, while retail uses have café terraces and spill-out spaces. Internal courtyards often provide a quieter atmosphere, like at Montclair; other times they provide the backdrop for much larger quads, like at Rutgers.
Enable Ecologies
Every campus exists within an
ecosystem, yet awareness of that ecosystem is often nonexistent. The Livingston campus, adjacent to the Rutgers Ecological Preserve and Natural Teaching Area, was uniquely positioned to bring students in contact with the environment of natural contiguous areas of forest, streams, and wildlife habitats. Natural space of this sort provides a relaxed alternative to the activity of the street and also offers students jogging, hiking, bicycling, and other outdoor opportunities. These relationships are encouraged at Rutgers with new, dedicated greenways linking the campus back to the reserve and dictating the placement of all future buildings in the master plan. The new student housing at Rutgers embraces this greenway and celebrates the
connections from its courtyards to the greenway.
Mix Uses
Mixed-use planning is not often found on campuses and yet has been a critical part in the success of most urban settings. Mixed-use development is slowly being recognized as a valid planning concept for the college or university campus. Like its urban counterpart, a collegiate mixed-use building will have public uses on the ground floor, where frequent street interaction creates viability for retail, assembly, classroom, or hospitality uses.
