Don’t Make Your Cat Do the Tweeting
Got a Twitter account? Great! If not,
set one up for free at www.twitter.
com. Choose a screen name that’s
professional and reflective of who
you are. Try to avoid using numbers
in your screen name and, if suitable,
use your actual name or a variation.
Like many other technology
platforms, Twitter has its share of
spammers, and most of them are
easily identified by the excessive use
of numbers in their names.
Everyone starts out with an
egg as their user picture until they
upload one of their own. Upload
a professional, appropriate picture
of your face. Even though you may
have the world’s cutest cat and want
to show her off, a picture of her
doesn’t help people make a personal
connection with you. Also, take a
minute and fill out your biography.
Share with the Twitterverse (that’s
Twitter slang for “universe”) who
you are, what you do, and why
they should follow you. Include
something about student affairs or
residence life. Avoid disclosing too
much information here. A good rule
of thumb is that if you wouldn’t say it
in a job interview, it shouldn’t be in
your Twitter bio.
Make sure your Tweets are
public. Having private tweets can be
a safety net for people, but it will
make it harder for people to connect
with you and nearly impossible for
you to engage in conversation.
To engage in the ACUHO-I
backchannel, search Twitter for
#ACUHOI. Adding the pound sign,
called a hashtag on Twitter, turns any
word into a searchable link. When
you search for #ACUHOI, you’ll find a
conversation that goes on year round
but certainly becomes more vibrant
during the annual conference. Think
of the backchannel as a conference

that would be beneficial to others in the
