VISION

A Growing Body

Do you know what makes a good housing professional? You may have some thoughts on the subject, but there’s no easy answer to that question, so let us try another one. What does a successful housing professional need to know? That one is no easier. A variety of abilities are required for different functional areas, different positions, and different levels of experience. Then consider the number of hard skills (budgeting, occupancy management, etc.) as well as soft skills (communication, negotiating campus politics, etc.) that are required. The depth and breadth of these questions can become overwhelming.

A BODY OF KNOWLEDGE CAN BE DEFINED AS A PEER-DEVELOPED COMPENDIUM OF WHAT AN INDIVIDUAL MUST KNOW OR BE ABLE TO DO TO ACCOMPLISH WORK IN A SPECIFIC FIELD OR ROLE.

Despite their enormity, these questions are exactly what a new association task force will answer as ACUHO-I defines a body of knowledge for the college and university housing profession. A body of knowledge can be defined as a peer-developed compendium of what an individual must know or be able to do to accomplish work in a specific field or role. A task force of volunteers and central office staff members has begun the process. When complete, this body of knowledge will assist colleges and universities in their goal to create housing options that positively impact their students and communities. In addition, ACUHO-I will utilize the profession’s body of knowledge to guide its programs, products, services, and work. The project is still in its early stages. The first meeting was last December, and the committee followed with another face-to-face gathering in March. Work continues to identify the multitude of domains, sub-domains, and functional competencies that exist throughout campus housing. Guiding us in this process is the desire to represent student learning and engagement as the unique element of student housing, focus on individual competencies rather than organizational or institutional standards, benefit as many people as possible, and provide a framework for professional development and career progression.

The possibilities of this project are incredibly exciting. If you would like more information, please feel free to contact either of us or the ACUHO-I central office. As the project moves forward, we will have a better answer to the question of what makes a housing professional successful, which will allow ACUHO-I to better provide the resources and information required to make that success obtainable. Tony Cawthon and Pamela Schreiber Chairs, ACUHO-I Body of Knowledge Task Force
