Survey Says Boost My Self-Esteem
New research from The Ohio State University in Columbus indicates that college-age students place a higher value on experiences that boost their self-esteem than on any other pleasurable activity suggested by the study, including seeing a best friend, eating a favorite food, and even receiving a paycheck. The study, which appears in the December 2010 online version of the Journal of Personality, states that both survey and laboratory results upheld these findings among test participants. Survey questions asked students to rank (on separate scales of 1 to 5) how much they liked and wanted each of the positive experiences. The distinction between liking and wanting is an important one in addiction studies; addicts report wanting the object of their addiction to a higher degree than they report liking it. In the OSU study, liking each activity was ranked higher than wanting it by research participants, indicating a healthy relationship to the experiences. Activities that boosted self-esteem, however, were marked by the smallest difference between liking and wanting. Brad Bushman, lead author of the study, says that while this doesn’t indicate that students are addicted to boosting their self-esteem, “they were closer to being addicted to self-esteem than they were to being addicted to any other activity we studied.” Although ramifications of the research are unclear, the study also found correlations between students with a high desire for self-esteem boosts and high scores for entitlement on a narcissism scale. From this, Bushman suggests that perhaps society’s emphasis on boosting self-esteem is not wholly positive. He cites the lack of evidence connecting high self-esteem with a reduction in societal ills, in spite of rising levels of reported self-esteem over the last several decades. Jennifer Crocker, a co-author of the study, agrees that placing too much value on maintaining high self-esteem may be detrimental to personal growth and relationships. When an individual values self-esteem above acknowledging or correcting a mistake or apologizing to a friend or colleague, high self-esteem can become a negative rather than a positive. This research contributes to a body of work examining empathy and values among today’s generation of college and university students and will certainly not be the last of its kind. Supporting Students in Recovery from Addiction
Programming related to reducing the negative consequences of drug and alcohol use is a common sight on campuses and in the residence halls, but often the programs are designed more for the general student population or for students who abuse these substances than for students actively in recovery from addiction. An article in the most recent issue of the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, “Supporting Students in Recovery on College Campuses: Opportunities for Student Affairs Professionals,” provides an in-depth look at the experiences of students recovering from drug and alcohol addictions on college and university campuses. The article reviews the literature related to students’ mental health and substance abuse, along with an explanation of the different definitions and understandings of the word recovery. Student affairs professionals, and housing professionals in particular, are in a unique position to offer guidance and support to students dealing with these issues, and the approaches some institutions are taking in this area – including “designated housing for recovering students, educational and intervention services by certified substance abuse counselors, and 12-step meetings” (p. 53) – are presented. Opportunities for support and elements of a successful framework for recovery programming are discussed from the perspective of student affairs, making this a valuable resource for housing professionals who want to get involved with supporting this vulnerable and under-served community of students. Pregnant Teens Want to Go to College, Need Support, Study Suggests
A recent study by researchers at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island found that there were no significant differences in the college and career aspirations of teenage girls who intended to get pregnant and those whose pregnancy was unintentional. These results were contrary to what the researchers expected to learn; their original hypothesis was that teens with career aspirations requiring secondary education would be less likely to report their pregnancy as being intentional than would teens whose career goals do not require an undergraduate degree. The study, examining over 250 volunteer patients over two years in the hospital’s Women’s Primary Care Center, determined that nearly 60 percent of pregnant teenagers intended to pursue a career that requires a college degree and planned to attend college after the birth of their child. These results indicate that a greater need exists for support and counseling for teen mothers, both in order to help them finish high school and over the course of their undergraduate careers. A number of colleges and universities around the country offer programs and housing support for degree-seeking students who are single parents, and the information gained in this research seems to show that this continues to be an important area for efforts among higher education professionals.
