On a Personal Note
Residence life staff can utilize their myriad professional roles to make themselves more visible as well as increase their interactions with students. By immersing themselves in a new position, they can gain a clearer perspective on the interests and needs of their students while also developing stronger relationships with them. As the coordinator for residential education, Ziena Miller had the opportunity to serve as a Spring Break Immersion mentor at DePaul. In her position, she worked alongside a student leader to help prepare students for a trip to the Bronx in New York City. During her time as a mentor, Miller experienced the impact of reaching out to students in an alternative role: “As our time together progressed, I found it impossible to remain an advisor to the group. My students wanted to engage with me and hear my perspectives on the experience as well. These moments created a deeper reflection than I had anticipated and were truly influential moments for these students.” By seeing staff working in roles outside their normal positions, students become better acquainted with the leaders in their residential community and can participate in a more personalized environment.

Through his work at various higher educational institutions, Paul Wuennenberg, a principal at Mackey Mitchell Architects, recognizes the importance of design in creating both social and personal spaces. At the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, Wuennenberg and his design team developed
