UNIVERSITY AWARDED FOR NEW STRIDES IN SUSTAINABILITY
The University of California-Berkeley has been recognized as the ﬁrst public university in the nation to receive Marine Stewardship Council certiﬁcation, an honor highlighting the institution’s commitment to seafood sustainability. Designed to help maintain the health and stability of oceans as well as to preserve ﬁsh stocks, the Marine Stewardship Council rewards sustainability in ﬁshing practices and works with other partners to create a sustainable seafood market. The council’s Chain of Custody certiﬁcation acknowledges dining programs that show that their seafood comes from a council-certiﬁed supplier and that it is stored separately from non-certiﬁed seafood. Along with implementing globally recognized eco-labels on menus and food stations, the University of California-Berkeley’s four dining halls will feature posters and tabletop ads to promote students’ knowledge of the sustainability certiﬁcation. In addition to achieving this honor, the university’s dining program was recognized in 2006 as the ﬁrst in the nation to earn organic certiﬁcation.
