Name: Mathias Hall Opened: August 2010 • Cost: $3.5 million Architects: Bryan Keys & Associates; Jean Sebben Associates In an effort to meet student demands while also utilizing innovative solutions, ACUHO-I’s 21st Century Project has inspired imaginative designs and redeﬁned the guidelines for student housing in the future. Extending far beyond simply providing a living space for students, this project is dedicated to reshaping the entire on-campus living experience. Colorado College was recently selected as one of three campuses in the nation to participate in the prototype phase of this project, a design process reﬂected in their renovation of Mathias Hall. Coinciding with the deﬁning concepts promoted by the project, the renovation promotes community, ﬂexibility, sustainability, technology, and innovation within the 1960s residence hall. Lounges and mini hubs serve as working and learning spaces for residents, while movable furniture and a mixed-use area within the central lounge allow them to make the most of their residential space. Along with various options of connectivity for devices and media, the building also provides several spaces for laptop use, including study spaces and a bar top area. As a means to promote sustainability, the residence hall design included the addition of GREENGUARD-certiﬁed and locally sourced products, recycling centers, low ﬂow ﬁxtures, and energy efﬁcient lighting. Mathias Hall captures one of the 21st Century Project’s deﬁning concepts – innovation – with the creation of blocks within the building’s four livinglearning neighborhoods: Grassroots Organizing, The Spirit of Non-Violence, Gender and Sexuality, and Global. Along with this emphasis on social interaction and education, another innovative feature within the hall is the booth enclosures located on the ﬁrst ﬂoor, which can be used as small study and conference areas. Once characterized by an isolated, cave-like atmosphere, Mathias Hall has evolved into an open, connected community that promotes student engagement. In addition to the resources inspired by elements of the 21st Century Project, the four-story residence hall also provides other amenities, including a convenience store, classroom, theater room, and common kitchen. Noted as the largest residence hall on campus, Mathias Hall is home to 300 residents, primarily ﬁrst-year and secondyear students.
