Hutchings, leadership consultant for Beta Theta Pi Fraternity at Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, says, “Like our chapters, the more diverse the advising team is the more perspectives they bring to the table. We simply want the best men and women, affiliated or unaffiliated, developing our students on a daily basis.” The prevailing idea is that the chapter operates better with the best possible person in the position, not just someone affiliated with the chapter. The second advising structure is a fraternal organization’s housing corporation, which can be local or national. The collective group will organize membership for fundraising,
involvement, or other chapter-related events. If the chapter is housed in an on-campus facility, the housing corporation may provide funding for new furnishings or to upgrade existing facilities. If a college or university is looking for support to build new housing, the organization may be able to start a capital campaign. Leah Carnahan, coordinator of fraternity and sorority housing at TCU, sees the positive and negative side of these corporations. “House corporations can be both an asset and a challenge. National housing corporations are supportive of the local chapter but maintain a business approach. Local house corporations are often local alumni who want to remain very involved. Often these local groups operate with little input from the
active collegiate chapter members residing in the facility. Establishing lines of communication and informing all parties involved in the process is critical for successful relationships with chapters and their house corporations.” The housing corporation is interested in collaboration, but the national organization is also interested in generating revenue. This balance is important because it helps the Greek organization leverage current assets to expand to new campuses. As Ryan Williams, assistant director of Greek life at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, says, “The key is partnering with the university and
