THE TRANSFORMATION

institutions must adapt in order to appeal to today’s students. These consumers are experts at multitasking, are as entrepreneurial about their educations as they are about their professions, and are nomadic with their work and lifestyles. They’re pushing colleges and universities to support them with customized degrees, not being content with traditional four-year degrees. They are willing to invest additional time in college to become more versatile professionals, pursuing more innovative career directions. They often pursue multiple majors and multiple minors, have voracious appetites for learning, and are restless to explore non-traditional career directions. In turn, academic leaders understand that the traditional model of campus planning, with its discretely defined precincts, no longer appeals to this generation of students. Just as

campuses have discovered the value of hybrid, multidisciplinary academic facilities, they must now consider an extension of this concept across the entire campus. The Johnston project – a multidisciplinary precinct – exemplifies a creative blend of living-learning experiences, reflecting the diversity of the Millennial student’s lifestyle. Recognizing that many institutions face budget challenges, the Hudson & Perrin model of enriched living-learning programming can be extremely effective in both recruiting and retaining these students. Likewise, the Johnston model is an excellent example of breathing new life into existing campus assets. Bold, diverse and sustainable, the Johnston Building is a vibrant expression of an academic village for the Millennial Generation. ts
