One of the great things about working in campus housing and being a member of ACUHO-I is how it often provides us an opportunity to experience the world without leaving our campus. Take a minute to think about the students and colleagues your job has put you in contact with, and begin to place virtual push-pins into your mental world map. I imagine that the number of cities, states, countries, and continents represented there will surprise you.
There Is much we can learn From each oTher, and each year we see a growIng number oF sTudenTs who TraVel across geographIc borders To lIVe In our halls.
Through the coming year, ACUHO-I will again provide multiple opportunities for cross-country and cross-cultural interactions. First will be the 2012 International Student Affairs Study Tour to China. From May 20 to June 2, members from ACUHO-I and four other higher education associations will enhance their understanding of the Chinese higher education system and practices through visits to Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, and Beijing. ACUHO-I is also incredibly excited to build upon the 2009 ACUHO-I Global Housing Summit by presenting its first ACUHO-I International Symposium. On Saturday, July 7 – just prior to the start of the 2012 ACUHO-I Annual Conference & Exposition in Anaheim, California – campus housing professionals from around the world will gather for lively and informative dialogue. There is much we can learn from each other, and each year we see a growing number of students who travel across geographic borders to live in our halls. The globalization of higher education is one of the most important issues facing our profession. Fortunately, we boast a deep pool of experts from whom we can learn.
Details of the International Symposium are being finalized as I write this. What we do know is that our members have asked repeatedly for the association to facilitate a conversation such as this. If you are a housing professional who works outside the United States or if you are an American housing professional with a desire to learn more about housing operations and students from other countries, please continue to watch for more information and save the date for this incredible experience.
