How Do You Make the Transition from Quarters to Semesters?
Members share how their housing processes and plans changed to accommodate this transformation of the academic calendar.
Participating in this conversation are Tracy Benner, director of residence life at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio; Dan Bertsos, director of residence services at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio; Scott Boden, associate director of outreach and engagement at The Ohio State University in Columbus.

Tracy Benner: Are you transitioning to a
traditional semester next year? What kinds of issues are you addressing right now in preparation for the transition?

DAN BERTSOS

Dan Bertsos: Today is our first day of spring
break, so it’s a different kind of busy (than when school is in session) as we bid farewell to the last winter quarter at Wright State and get ready for the last 10-week spring term. We’ll be going to a 15-week semester starting in the fall. Like any other campus that has made that transition, when the old calendar, which lasts deep into August, collides with the new semester starting in the same month (when it used to get rolling in September), it gets pretty exciting. We don’t know yet what life will be like without the long-term break we used to have in December (six weeks). And there’s the possibility that the campus will close between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays for the first time, in the middle of a three-week break, though we’ll be open to serve our housing residents and prepare for the next semester.

are a few things we’ve noticed. One big change has been the opening/closing schedule. Our final exam schedule changed drastically, which caused us to change our closing times. On the plus side, our opening schedule was cleaned up because we no longer had athletes arriving a full month before the beginning of school, and we stopped housing them as a team in one building for their camp for two to three weeks and then moving them to their permanent assignments. Our coaches miss this, but we enjoyed being able to move everyone to their permanent assignments when they arrived.

TRACY BENNER

Bertsos: We anticipate the same challenges resulting from the shortened time between summer on the quarter calendar and fall on the new semester schedule. And we’re still tweaking our plans after a year of preparation.
Our early arriving residents, particularly athletes, don’t change significantly for us as we accommodate their fall workouts. And we don’t have a football team to worry about, so our demand for athletic housing (two soccer teams and volleyball) are minor by comparison. Our past and current practice of moving all

SCOTT BODEN Benner: Since we are now on semesters, there
