Otherwise I would spend all day in meetings and never get time to do the work planned in the meeting – or to manage email.” It is easy, especially when new to a job, to take on too many responsibilities, to demonstrate your worth by taking on more work, to take work home with you and allow it to invade your personal life – but this can lead to stress and frustration and often results in burnout. Learning to
say “no,” whether to a request to meet an earlier deadline or to chaperone your child’s school trip, and learning to nurture yourself are important parts of the process of achieving a healthy balance between work and personal life. It’s important to remember that this is a learning experience which requires some serious deliberation about what is necessary, satisfying, and most important – and it takes a lot of practice. Martin Scoufield says she is “much more reflective now and much more protective of my schedule than I was as a new professional. I feel more empowered to have flexibility, but that is something I have had to learn. And I needed positive reinforcement from my supervisor(s). I used to equate the amount of time
I spent working to how successful I was as a staff member. I do not think this is the case, and it is a dangerous belief to perpetuate, especially in live-in/live-on positions where there is less physical separation between an employee and job/home.” Even though many housing professionals are making a concerted effort to better negotiate their professional and personal priorities, there are still a number of challenges to overcome. One is the feeling of guilt when you cannot make an immediate decision or are forced to simply say “no.” As Lade notes, the feeling of guilt can be a stumbling block to achieving work-life balance.
