Name: Mesquite Village West Opened: August 2011 • Cost: $18 million Architect: BOKA Powell After building its first new residence hall in 37 years in 2009, Texas A&M University, Kingsville, has completed another project to increase the number of students living on campus. Mesquite Village West houses 300 students in two- and four-bedroom suites, complete with a kitchenette and living room. The hall also accommodates the administrative offices of the honors college. This four-story building was designed by BOKA Powell, the architects who also designed Texas Stadium, previously home to the Dallas Cowboys professional football team. The building features student lounge areas complete with televisions and game tables, as well as an outdoor picnic area. The covered pavilion lends itself to the recreational and educational activities planned by the residence hall staff. Solar water heaters installed for the building contribute to an environmentally focused effort to generate natural energy. Thomas Martin, director of university housing, says this is the first time the university has established an administrative college in the same building as a residence hall. About 60 percent of honors college students live on the first two floors of the hall, making up one of the several living and learning communities across campus. Another community featured in Mesquite Village West boasts of its “passion for fashion.” The Fashonista living-learning community appeals to students interested in design, modeling, and, of course, fashion. According to Martin, the population of students living on campus has nearly doubled in the five years he has worked there. In order to accommodate more students, a twin project is already on the drawing board. The next residence hall, Mesquite Village East, is scheduled to open in August 2013.
