SUNY Expanding Housing Options
A growing demand for student housing as well as higher student enrollment numbers are prompting many of the campuses within the State University of New York system to begin building or expanding their student housing options. Currently, more than half of the 30 schools within the system are building or expanding, and many are in the process of initiating more residential options. Both Fulton Montgomery Community College and Schenectady County Community College have residences set to open for the fall 2012 semester. Fulton Montgomery’s second residence hall will cost approximately $11.3 million and will provide 144 beds in an apartment-style unit. Schenectady County’s first residential unit will house 264 students in four- and two-person suites. SUNY Adirondack is also developing its first housing unit, set to cost $25.5 million, which will have 400 beds in a traditional residence hall style building.

These new residences will provide many benefits to the campuses, such as improved enrollment and retention rates and other benefits specific to each individual college. “We see this as a wonderful opportunity to serve our student athletes, specific programs that attract students from outside of our county or state, such as aviation science, music, or culinary arts, and our community at large by bringing business to downtown Schenectady,” says Martha Asselin, vice president of student affairs at Schenectady County Community will be living College.
