Still Flying the Green Flag

In a time of transition, sustainability remains a priority.
As readers of the Talking Stick are aware, the first semester or quarter after a break is a time of great change for the residence life professional. Students return from their homes and must overcome the chaos of move-in week; it isn’t until classes begin that a light at the end of the transitional period begins to appear. But this transition is also notable for being a time for the birth of new initiatives and programs. Sometimes, these are put into effect by the installation of new staff members, while other times they have been in development all year. As sustainability continues to become a higher priority for institutions across the country, a fresh new crop of programs has sprung up this year. In addition to conserving resources and promoting environmentally healthy practices, these programs have an added bonus in that they’re usually constructed to save their parent institutions money as well. When looking at recent sustainability developments around the country, what better

place to start than with the new person who will be representing these initiatives for ACUHO-I? Incoming Sustainability Advisory Chair Joshua Belice took time to discuss the sustainability initiatives at his home institution, Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. “At Shepherd University, we’re taking more of a grassroots approach,” says Belice, who adds that residence life is “the driving force” behind their sustainability efforts. Programs are partially funded by the students themselves using an upcycling program, where trash such as candy and cookie wrappers is gathered and sent off to a company called TerraCycle, which then turns the trash into new products as varied as folders, tote bags, and picture frames. For each piece of trash, the company pays the university about two cents. “We then invest that money in other sustainability programs on campus,” says Belice.
