Teaching Moments

When it comes to combating homophobia, housing staff can be both educators and activists.
Through the years, there have been great strides in the ways that college and university campuses welcome gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students. Campuses work to create inclusive programs. Policies such as gender-neutral housing are crafted. Organizations such as Campus Pride publically rank GLBT-friendly schools as well as organize educational and activist resources. Yet for all the progress there remain untold numbers of instances of harassment, prejudice, and homophobia. Some of those instances receive headlines, such as the case of Tyler Clementi’s harassment and subsequent suicide. However, most of them remain unreported and under the radar, demonstrating that work remains to be done. In the book Acting Out! Combating

Homophobia Through Teacher Activism (Teachers College Press, 2010), editors Mollie V. Blackburn, Caroline T. Clark, Lauren M. Kenney, and Jill M. Smith share stories from a variety of backgrounds that display ways in which teachers can create a safe learning environment while challenging homophobia as well as heterosexism. Since its release, the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Association for Multicultural Education have awarded the book, and it also won the AERA Queer Studies SIG Body of Work Award. Though the book is initially directed toward elementary, middle, and high school teachers, the lessons and examples included are also applicable to the teaching and activism that occurs in residence halls.
