Room for Everyone
One of the challenges for this generation of students is access to higher education. At the same time that we continue to learn the importance of a post-secondary education for future gainful employment, we also understand the impediments that can stand in the way. As just one example, data suggests that students from upper-income families persist toward graduation at a 60 percent rate, while those from lower-income families persist at only 20 percent.

Economic status is not the only characteristic used to put individuals into categories. Fortunately, a central value of our profession is to strive to eliminate those barriers and work toward a more diverse and inclusive environment. We fundamentally believe that doing so makes the residential experiences better for all our students. We believe in diversity with a big “D,” and to show it we operate housing that is globally inclusive, ethnically diverse, gender neutral, and open to students of all ages and physical abilities.
ACUHO-I is bringing that same approach to its association business through the Principles of Engagement of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity. Adopted last year, the principles state that we will (1) understand the value of diversity, the integrity of equity, and the benefit of inclusive practice; (2) identify the elements of association members’ work that can be leveraged to make a difference; (3) model inclusive practices in all of the association’s work; (4) connect cultural competence to performance outcomes; (5) build the association’s capacity to assist its organizational members by offering relevant education and professional development; and (6) assess progress toward achieving goals for diversity. Now is the time for us to put our words into action. Through 2013 and beyond, you will see an increased and more purposeful means to embed these principles in our work, such as event curricula, committee projects, communication resources, program learning objectives, and our general business. To start, a special effort is being made by workgroup chairs to set applicable goals and objectives for their groups as well as to develop rubrics to assess the outcomes. Soon you will see the results in the pages of our publications, the resources in our library, the programs at our conferences, and much more. We recognize this is just a start. Still, we believe it is essential for us to model diversity and inclusive practices. We invite you to join us in this effort, and, if you have any questions or comments related to it, I invite you to share them with me or the board’s Inclusion and Equity Director, Deb Schmidt-Rogers of DePaul University.
