Name: Lakeside Village Opened: August 2011 Cost: $14 million Architect: Lott + Barber After transitioning from a community college to a four-year institution in 2009, the College of Coastal Georgia has opened its first residence hall on campus, Lakeside Village. The threestory building houses 350 first-year students and student athletes in three wings of various suite-style apartments with private bedrooms and bathrooms. Previously a commuter-only school, the college now has developed another prominent eye-catching draw for students other than its academics and proximity to the beach. Michael Butcher, director of residence life and housing at CCGA, says the student housing development fosters an integral part of a traditional academic and social college experience. Along with the view of the college’s lake from this appropriately named residence hall, students also enjoy a large courtyard for outdoor activities and large-scale programming, such as pick-up soccer games and concerts. The kitchen within the hall’s multipurpose room also caters events throughout campus. With access to 11 study lounges, a game room, open air breezeway between wings, and accessible Wi-Fi, students have ample opportunities to maximize their residence hall for both studying and socializing. Lakeside Village also prioritizes student safety by providing a gated parking lot with three emergency call boxes, requiring card access for entry into the building and each suite, and monitoring both the parking lot and entrances with video surveillance. Students also have access to an

auxiliary campus police office, information desk, and 24/7 support from the residence staff. While protecting students, Lakeside Village also focuses on preserving the environment. Inoperable windows maintain consistent temperatures and prevent outdoor humidity from entering the building. The windows also have highefficiency low-E glazing, according to Butcher. Six energy recovery units lower heating and cooling utility costs, while dual-flush toilets and occupancy light sensors reduce water and electricity usage.
