A new seven-story residence hall at Florida Atlantic University will open for 614
freshman students in the fall. The building will implement Florida Atlantic’s
first faculty-in-residence program with live-in professionals, classrooms, and
administrative offices. The 190,000-square-foot building will have four-person suites
with 400 single-occupancy rooms and 200 double-occupancy rooms. CummingsBalfour Beatty is constructing the building designed by architects PGAL/SSI.
Indiana state university

Terre Haute, Indiana
Projected Opening: April 2013

Cost: $21 million

As the first new residence hall on this campus in more than 40 years, North
Residence Hall will expand Indiana State University’s mission to become a more
residential campus. The single- and double-occupancy rooms will house 352
students in four stories and eight separate complexes. The new hall at Indiana
State will provide housing for upper-division students and student organizations,
including eight of the nine Panhellenic groups on campus. The architect and
construction teams for the project are CSO Architects and Hannig Construction,
respectively.

Campus housing is all about creating an effective physical environment that
helps people to live and to learn. Now ACUHO-I is taking those lessons to heart
as the association moves into a new office building later this year (see the Vision
article on page 6).
The renovated building will be a gathering place for the profession. To that
end, this project will provide numerous opportunities for ACUHO-I corporate
members to assist the association in realizing its vision by providing in-kind
goods and services. Some of the items that will be needed in the new office
include flooring, furniture, lighting, appliances, fixtures, access and fire and life
safety equipment, and much more.
The Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company architecture firm helped
ACUHO-I kick off this project by donating its consulting services to create a
critical space use plan that informed the eventual building design.
The renovation work has already begun, so these opportunities will

Interface, Inc., global creator of
modular carpet, has developed
a partnership program with the
Zoological Society of London (ZSL)
to create a community-based supply
chain for discarded fishing nets. The
initiative, Net-Works, improves the
environment of coastal communities
in the Philippines by recycling nylon
from the nets into carpet yarn. NetWorks collected one metric ton of nets
during the first month of operation,
aiming to collect 20 metric tons by
the end of April. Net-Works currently
involves more than 280 impoverished
households in its collection system.
