Facility assessment is another tool in your tool box that will
get you closer to the housing stock you dream about.
Do you find yourself on a beautiful
campus with lovely landscapes and
a mix of old and new facilities? Do
you worry about the condition of the
systems you can't see from a walk
down the hallways? Do you have some
ideas to modify your older halls to
better serve your students' needs?
Have you presented your ideas and
concerns but are having difficulty
selling them? Have you considered a
facility assessment?
A facility assessment can provide
the information you need to quantify
the needs you have expressed and also
support the renovations you know
will bring your older halls up to date.
For more than two decades the facility

assessment has been recognized
throughout the facilities world in
higher education, private industry, and
the federal sector as the benchmark
for a facility's condition. There are
universally accepted standards that can
be applied to an individual building,
a group of buildings, or an entire
campus. The assessment can quantify
the deferred needs, the immediate
needs, and future needs of your halls.
Initially, the standard was the
Facility Condition Index (FCI), which
uses the total cost of maintenance,
repair, replacement, and code
deficiencies in a facility divided by
the current replacement value of
the facility. The introduction of the
