Testing the Waters
The ACUHO-I Housing Internship Program has grown into an annual rite of passage for hundreds of graduate
and undergraduate students considering campus housing or student affairs as a career. The number of
participating students has risen dramatically in recent years, and, when milestones are reached on the
process timeline, Facebook and Twitter posts explode with candidates enthusiastically reporting submitting
their application, landing an interview, and - most important - being selected by a host institution.
The application process for both intern applicants and host institutions opened last month and will be
available on the ACUHO-I website until January 13, 2015. The Talking Stick spoke with six students fresh off
their 2014 internship experiences and asked them questions about the work they did, the experiences they
had, and if they feel more prepared for the next step of their professional growth.

TS:	Please	share	details	about	the	specific	work	and	
projects	you	tackled	during	your	internship.	

Justin Kyle Tanner: At Texas A&M UniversityCommerce, I had the unique opportunity as an
undergrad to be more than just an RA. I handled
guest check-in/out, facility requests, and staff for
multiple camps and orientations. The residential
living and learning office at Texas A&M hooked
me up with another internship in Greek life, and
for both offices I traveled to several campuses
such as the University of Texas at Dallas, Trinity
University in San Antonio, and Texas Tech in
Lubbock for various conferences and training.
While in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I also

received the opportunity to participate in a
mock "TPE interview day" at Texas Christian
University in Fort Worth. To say the least, my
summer was packed.

Annabel Feider: As I was at an institution
in Australia, this internship occurred in the
middle of the academic year at Federation
University Australia in Ballarat, Victoria. As
such, I primarily worked on assessment and
best practices research for their residence life
department. One project I worked on was
interviewing their resident advisor staff to gain
insight into the perspective they have on their
jobs and the department in general. My other
