YOUR ACUHO-I

Mary DeNiro Begins Tenure as New Executive Director
ACUHO-I welcomed its new executive director this
month as Mary DeNiro officially assumed her role with
the association. DeNiro is the third executive director
in the association's history, following in the footsteps of
Gary Schwarzmueller (1992-2004) and Sallie Traxler
(2004-2015).
"In the search for our new executive director,
we vetted a wide variety of talented candidates,"
says ACUHO-I President Tom Ellett, on behalf of
the association's Executive Board. "With the choice
of Ms. DeNiro as our new executive director, I am
exceedingly confident that the great work we've been
able to accomplish throughout ACUHO-I's history
will continue on unabated. The ACUHO-I leadership
looks forward to working together with her to create
the ACUHO-I strategic plan and set our course for the
future."
"I am incredibly excited about the opportunities that
are in front of us at ACUHO-I," says DeNiro, "and I
look forward to helping the association and its dedicated
members build upon the strong foundation that is in
place. I want to thank Sallie and the Executive Board as
well as Patty Martinez and the other members of the
transition committee who have been so open and helpful
during the onboarding process. It is readily apparent that
both the association and the ACUHO-I Foundation are
strong and well positioned to take that next step. I look
forward to being part of that journey."
DeNiro comes to ACUHO-I from the Wisconsin
Foundation and Alumni Association serving the
420,000 alumni of the University of WisconsinMadison where she has worked since 2006. There
she was the chief engagement officer. In that role she
demonstrated great financial acumen as she oversaw

global short- and long-term revenue and engagement
strategies. In addition, she helped lead 72 alumni
chapters as well as committees dedicated to diversity and
inclusion, international groups, and career networks.
Previously, she was the Wisconsin Alumni
Association's chief operating officer and executive
vice president and vice president of marketing and
communications. She has also been the senior vice
president of sales and marketing for Capital Newspapers
and the vice president of advertising for Thomson
Newspapers.
She is a graduate of Ohio University and holds an
MBA degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
She has also studied at the University of Pennsylvania
Wharton School of Business and the Northwestern
University executive management programs.

Internships Off to a Great Start
The ACUHO-I Housing Internship Program has grown into an annual rite of
passage for hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students considering campus
housing or student affairs as a career. The program provides students with
invaluable real-world work experience that can be applied to their current
coursework and gives those individuals an important first step toward a career in
the profession.
Each year, ACUHO-I member organizations from around the world post
positions spanning a variety of roles within student affairs. In total, this year's
program included 1,008 candidates, 936 openings, 452 positions, and 274 host sites. Thank you to all who participated
