Smart Settings
Honors student communities need extra support from staff and
faculty so that they can be engaged at a higher level.
The average honors student left high
school at the top of the class and met
requirements much higher than the
baselines set by their higher education
institution. These students are seen
by their teachers and mentors, as
well as by themselves, as possessing
exceptional ability and never meeting
a challenge they could not overcome,
perceptions that are amplified during
the college application process. In
general, honors students attend

class more consistently, have longer
attention spans, and are engaged
whenever they are present. Because
they are extremely focused on their
academic and career aspirations,
many arrive on campus with a detailed
plan for their next decade already laid
out, including their involvement in
extracurricular activities on campus.
As a group, honors students have
some unique needs, which can be
met when residence life staff leverage
their campus partnerships to create
enriched environments and provide
talented staff to bring these students
together around a common goal.
The development of competency
and identity in these students can look
very different than it does in other
Residential Educational Services
Develop academic partnerships to support academic initiative programmatic goals. Develop
program goals for residential learning communities.
