First impressions pack an
immeasurable weight for students
touring an institution's residence
halls. In addition, maintaining clean
spaces and responding to maintenance
requests directly impact a student's
decision to continue living on campus.
But when there are thousands upon
thousands of square feet of living,
social, and professional space to clean,
creating and maintaining an effective
cleaning schedule can prove to be
challenging.

Establishing a cleaning schedule
that fits an institution's specific
expectations first requires setting
the standard of cleanliness, taking
into consideration both what the
institution's standards are and what
is realistic in terms of daily, weekly,
and monthly tasks. Jackie Kimbler,
unit manager at Texas Tech University
in Lubbock, notes, "You have to have
a clear scope of work and then the
frequency of those tasks." Then those
tasks need to be prioritized within a
specific timeline. Holding frequent
meetings to evaluate space, budget,
and time limitations is an effective
way to prioritize what needs to be
done. James Bridgeforth, associate
director of housing and dining at
the University of South Alabama in
Mobile, says, "We sit down in May and
look at the timeline of where we need
to be every week, every month, until
the end of the summer." They also
examine the challenges ahead. "We
have some buildings that are brand
new; then we have some that are 40
years old that are popular because
they're apartment style," Bridgeforth
says. Naturally, the higher traffic
buildings have a significantly larger
cleaning requirement than do other
buildings.
