Blended Solutions
Work/life balance can't be achieved. But there is an alternative.
Forget about work/life balance. It does
not exist. It is akin to a dog chasing
its tail. It's the Easter Bunny, the Loch
Ness monster, or a pot of gold at the
end of the rainbow. You can look all
you like, but work/life balance is a
myth.
The key to achieving the happiness
and sense of wellness you strive for
means looking at a new paradigm:
the work/life blend. Like a coffee
blend, the right mix for each person
is different. But striving for a better
blend in and of itself is a whole

when wellness is hanging in the
balance. Just the idea of balancing is
precarious. One little slip, one tiny
flinch can throw you off balance and
potentially cause you to fall. But if your
blend is off, you make an adjustment
and do not have to worry about a fall.
There are several flaws with the
idea of work/life balance. For instance,

one side is heavier than the other, or
a person struggles to keep their body
centered so they don't fall off the
beam. Balance implies a struggle or,
at best, something that is always in
a position to be off. Thinking it is a
struggle is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Have we not learned from positive
psychology? We all know that looking
at what is working is better than a
constant focus on struggles and what
is not working.
Furthermore, it's in the math.
