VISION

Just the Facts
United States President John Adams once wrote, "Facts are stubborn things; and
whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they
cannot alter the state of facts and evidence." Mark Twain, meanwhile, is often quoted
as saying, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story."
Why are these quotations important to campus housing professionals? It's because
we have a good story to tell, but we need the facts to back it up. That is
the primary motivation behind the knowledge resources pillar of the
ACUHO-I Strategic Plan. This is what will guide your association as
an unprecedented level of resources are allocated toward generating,
cultivating, and disseminating research that supports our position that
campus housing positively impacts the student experience.

HAVING THIS
RESEARCH
AGENDA AT
OUR DISPOSAL
WILL ALSO
BE USEFUL IN
HELPING SET
THE DIRECTION
FOR THOSE
RESOURCES
THAT ARE
AT THE
FOUNDATION
OF ACUHO-I.

This effort begins with the ACUHO-I research agenda. Culled by the
ACUHO-I Research Committee, led by Paul Jahr, the agenda identifies
three areas of focus: public-private partnerships, student outcomes, and
student success. With topics identified, it was time for a deeper dive.
Supported by the ACUHO-I Foundation and underwritten in part by
Bedloft, we were able to fund four different research studies. Selected
by the Research Committee from 34 proposals, these projects will
explore the topics of gender-inclusive housing, staff training, publicprivate partnerships, and the value of living and learning in a residence
hall.
We are incredibly excited about the talented and knowledgeable
teams that are pursuing these projects and are confident that their
work will result in invaluable articles, presentations, and reports in the
future. This new research will build upon and update those studies that
we have relied on for decades.
Having this research agenda at our disposal will also be useful in
helping set the direction for those resources that are at the foundation
of ACUHO-I. We are fond of saying that we can do anything, but we
can't do everything. The research agenda will act as a signpost for the
association as we choose conference speakers and programs, seek
articles for publications, and explore partnerships.

What is important to remember is that this research agenda was
shaped, by and large, by the feedback received from a wide variety of our members.
In short, these are the topics and questions that are being bandied about on your
individual campuses. ACUHO-I wants to find the answers - with the data to back
them up - to prepare you to speak with all your campus constituents whether they be
students, parents, faculty, administrators, or governing bodies.
We know that the story of campus housing is a good one. The facts will help us tell
it convincingly.

TALKING STICK
Symbol of International
Friendship
Talking Stick magazine
takes its name from the
symbol of international
friendship presented
to ACUHO-I in 1973 by
the Ohiat Band of the
British Columbia Indian
Nation. The talking stick,
or speaker's staff, is
hand carved, and the
inscription explains, "It is
a sign of authority carried
when proclamations
are to be made or a
meeting of chiefs is in
session. It is a token
of common heritage
both to Canadians and
Americans."
