New Campus Carry Laws Lead to
Big Changes for Campus Life
On August 1, the 50th anniversary of the campus shooting at
The University of Texas at Austin, the state's campus carry law
took effect. As the eighth state to pass a mandatory campus
carry law for public institutions, Texas follows Colorado,
Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin
down the path towards a learning environment where guns
can be legally present. A total of 19 states have banned
conceal carry permits on their campuses, and 23 states allow
individual campuses to decide for themselves. Texas and the
seven other states mentioned above must adhere to the laws
spelled out by their legislatures, but individual campuses
generally have the ability to submit plans for how they will
operationalize them. Without a doubt, campus carry laws
stand to significantly impact how faculty and staff approach
their work, and understandably this phenomenon is of
particular concern for campus housing professionals.
As this issue evolves, campus leaders from states with
pending legislation will want to keep current with the latest
news. A few helpful resources suggested by ACUHO-I's
