Besting Biohazards
Departments can react swiftly and safely with a viable plan
in place.
When Ursinus College in Collegeville,
Pennsylvania, had a norovirus outbreak
on their campus earlier this year, the
staff knew they had to act fast. However,
by the time they figured out what
course of action to take, more than 100
students living in the residence halls
had fallen ill. Fortunately, they quickly
got the problem under control in a calm
and safe manner, but how would an
institution be able to keep everything
under control during an epidemic?

there are best practices to help higher
education institutions as they prepare
their protocols for handling biohazards
safely and efficiently.
Kyle Estes, the associate director
of facilities/operations at Texas State
University in San Marcos, shares
some best practices that have proven
effective for his team over the years.
He has created a module consisting of
four areas, which are embodied in the
four central suggestions that he offers.
First, ensure that students and staff
understand not only the campus's risk
management philosophy but also their
roles in it. They need to see how their
reaction to an event aligns with the
institution's philosophy and mission.
Second, form solid partnerships with
other campus departments such as
Facilities Management
Develop and maintain hazardous material management plan.
Provide staff training program.
