niversity and college housing professionals are, by
nature, skilled at partnership. The essence of their work
in providing direct service to a high percentage of an
institution's student population provides them with daily
opportunities to influence lives. Additionally, the types
of partnerships and collaborations through which this
is accomplished change throughout their careers and in
each type of position held. This realization drove us to
question the mechanisms by which that occurs and led
to a survey of fellow Chief Housing Officers (CHOs).
Through our study, we hoped to better understand the
qualities and types of partnerships that are integral
to this senior leadership role. We learned that the
partnerships you have as a CHO are broader, more
interdisciplinary, and of a greater scope than previously
required. In essence, what gets you there will not sustain
you. New relationships, new connections, and new
planning processes are required to best position your
department for success.
Some professionals began learning and honing partnership skills as
student hall council leaders who quickly learned that a program they could
easily do on their own could be improved by a great magnitude when he or
she partnered with student government to make it happen. Then as they
moved into entry-level jobs as newer professionals they had contacts, but
they were in a small circle. That work was directed inward to a community
they were responsible for developing and making it thrive. Partnerships at
this stage are primarily with other internal operations in the housing and
residence life unit and include assignments and custodial and maintenance
professionals. Where partnerships are outside of the department, they are
generally limited to other units within student affairs. When academic
partnerships exist, they are usually with a particular living-learning
community (LLC) or student success initiative.
Progressing through to new positions as mid-level managers,
professionals at this level have broader contacts both internal and external to
their departments. Their work is primarily directed at process and procedure
and, at times, to the day-to-day drama that comes with having the primary
responsibility for crisis management and student care and concern initiatives.
