We used three qualitative questions
to identify the five most common
partners on campus and to allow
respondents to comment on the
importance of having strong partners
in order to accomplish the work
in housing and residence life. The
questions and the survey results are
shared below.
The first question was, who are
your five key campus partners? Most
respondents narrowed their answer
to only five; however, many found it
difficult, stating that there were more
than five key partners on campus.
There were 43 unique answers
given for this question. The top two
were campus police and campus
facilities; each had 23 respondents
note them in their top five. The 43
answers were categorized into seven
general areas: academic affairs,
administrative services, campus
C
safety, facilities, student care, student
groups/activities, and student services.
Student care was the category that
had the highest number of partners,
yet only one of the five top unique
partners (counseling services) came
from that group. Having student care
as the top category for response may
be indicative of the growing time and
energy spent on helping students
in crisis, as well as the increased
formation of response teams on
campus such as those for behavior
intervention, care response, and threat
assessment. On many campuses the
CHO is the representative on these
teams and therefore he or she must
have strong relationships with the
partners involved.
The top five unique partners
identified were chief of police,
chief facilities officer, director of
admissions, dining, and counseling
services. While some of the answers
indicated the functional area for
the partner, many stated that it is
important to have a relationship with
the chief staff member for that area.
It is interesting to note that these five
top answers are from five different
categories. The five top answers were
very similar between public and
private institutions, regardless of the
length of time the respondent had
been a CHO.
The second question asked
respondents to relate a problem or
issue that occurred because of bad
collaboration or no collaboration.
Our survey sample shared a number
of comments on how concerns can
become problems when collaboration
and partnerships were not solid. Their
cautionary tales included one about
a campus security protocol change
communicated too late to identify
ategories of campus partners for the CHO/CRLO
