What's the biggest issue you see facing the profession
right now?
The rise of mental health-related struggles for our
students, in my opinion, is still a big issue for our
profession. As a field we need to be aware that some of
these students will become student affairs professionals
who will need appropriate support for their own
emotional wellness. This is especially important as
frontline staff are faced with an increasing number of
emotionally draining situations. As supervisors and
mentors, we must find a way to create spaces to have
honest conversations about taking care of yourself beyond
compassion fatigue. We also have a responsibility to stay
up to date on the community resources our employers
offer so we can make appropriate referrals for staff in
need, just like we would our students.
What are your favorite campus traditions?

TALKING STICK
MARY ANNE WILK is a hall
director at The Ohio State
University in Columbus.
Tradition runs deep at Ohio State University. Scarlet and
gray cover every inch of campus, OH-IO chants fill the air,
and in the fall you can hear the sounds of T.B.D.B.I.T.L [The
Best Damn Band in the Land] across campus. My favorite
tradition is the singing of "Carmen Ohio," the alma mater.
The song is traditionally sung at the close of an important
event. Community members form a circle and wrap their
arms around one another to sing and sway to the music.
The song evokes steadfast feelings of belonging, love for
the university community. The last line of the first verse is
my favorite, "Time and change will surely show how firm
thy friendship . . . Ohio."
What is your favorite parent story?
What motivates you the most in your job?
Some of my favorite parent stories come
from orientation. Parents ask questions
about every facet of life at Ohio State
in our sessions. One mom in particular
wins the award for the most interesting
question. She asked, in front of a group
of about 100 parents, "How many pairs
of underwear should my daughter bring
with her in the fall?" I responded by
telling her I was sure the options she
had then would be enough, unless she
didn't like to do laundry, in which case
she'd need more. Her question reminds
me that buried in the silly questions
or sometimes heated phone calls is an
unsure parent trying to make sure their
child has the best experience possible.
The time a person spends with us on campus is a
small window to make a big impact. I aspire to be an
agent of positive change in the lives of others. Focusing
on the development of individuals while working on
department-wide initiatives and supervision motivates
me in my daily work.
