REGROUP

by Shaun Nathaniel Crisler
Many of us can remember the day
when a professional pulled us aside and
encouraged us to apply for an RA, peer
mentor, or desk assistant position and
then coached and mentored us along the
way. They saw something in us that led
them to believe we had something special
to offer students. Some of us felt a sense
of purpose in this calling and now work to
mentor, coach, and inspire others to join
our field. Who knew that such a selfless
habit of investing our time and attention
in another person would be the very
recruitment catalyst that has replenished
our field with bright professionals year
after year? It is no secret that many of
us have made it into the field because
someone took us under their wing and
mentored us in the ways of the profession.
As new professionals, many of us are
eager to make an impact on our campus,
and we were told early and often to find
a mentor. Some of us took the advice 20
years ago, and that guidance has helped
shape our careers and foster professional
and personal relationships. Special
relationships like these can also provide
shelter when the storms of life come and
can sustain us through the low points like
the loss of a job, poor leadership decisions,
policy changes, racism or sexism, difficult
supervisors, and countless other personal
challenges.

president for student affairs at Georgia
College in Milledgeville, comments on
the importance of having a mentor in
the early stages of his career. "In my
time, mentors were like a sage; they were
people whose opinions mattered, and you
carried a great deal of respect for them
as professionals. So many of us would
watch and learn, and you would find the
professional that you most admired and
try to think about the best way to handle
a situation by putting yourself in their
shoes to say 'What would James Grimm
do in this situation?' James Grimm was
