Tiny Housing, Big Success
Building smaller housing units makes a positive difference in cost
and community.
"When I walked in, I thought it looked
European-style, kind of like Ikea . . .
I feel like I'm living the dream. It's
like living in a hotel," says Amanda
Anyim, a sophomore in the honors
college at the College of Charleston
in South Carolina, about living in a
pod that at 252 square feet is about
the size of one and a half parking
spots. Colleges like Charleston and
the College of Wooster in Ohio have
realized the potential of tiny living
spaces and have brand new residence
halls that are dedicated to them. There
are many reasons for what motivates

institutions to go little. Some have
limited land available to build more
halls, and others see this as a way to
model energy efficient, sustainable
living. And for all who build these
communities, it's an answer, or at
least part of one, to the housing crisis
on their campus.
Many colleges and universities
don't have the opportunity to buy
more land for housing, so they have
to find ways to convert existing
buildings into residence halls. This
is what the College of Wooster did
when they decided to renovate an old
schoolhouse that hadn't been used
for decades into a new residence
hall full of tiny living spaces. These
small rooms, referred to as pods, are
carefully designed, with lofted beds
within a 7'0'' x 11'6'' x 10'6" space and
a crow's nest above every entryway
that can be used for storage. The
