when preventive education efforts will
have the greatest impact.
One of the key responsibilities of
this position is the development and
execution of proactive educational
campaigns aimed at teaching the
student body and campus community
about Title IX issues. According to
Teresa Taylor, interim executive director of institutional policy, risk management, and compliance at Northwest
Arkansas Community College in
Bentonville, "Proactive education
means that we value student success
enough to give them the information
and the rules of the game up front.
Sharing information about the law,
campus policies and processes, who
the student can contact for confidential
assistance, and services which may
be needed to navigate various situations is a valuable tool we can give to
our students." One way to educate the
campus community is to create an "It's

On Us" campaign, an initiative that
utilizes social media such as Facebook
and YouTube to increase the awareness of sexual assault on campuses.
According to their website, their goals
are as follows: "To recognize that
non-consensual sex is sexual assault.
To identify situations in which sexual
assault may occur. To intervene in
situations where consent has not or
cannot be given. To create an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported."
Adapting their campaign to your own
campus could involve hosting screenings of such documentaries as "The
Hunting Ground" and "Audrie and
Daisy," sponsoring roundtable discussions among several different campus
groups, working with the campus
health center or women's center to discuss the issue of consent, or hosting
bystander intervention training.
With Title IX and student crisis
reports on college and university cam-

puses receiving an increasing amount
of attention nationwide, it's imperative
to determine how your own campus
can more fully support students in
crisis. You may find that leveraging one
position to coordinate supportive efforts
may be the best practice for student
advocacy. Morrison speaks first-hand
to this strategy: "I am able to dedicate
quality time toward following up on
student concerns and working with all
campus partners to provide resources
for students to help them succeed." 
