about it. This not only helps you to
get to know them, but also creates
space for dialogue should there be
disagreement.

Integrate professional development activities around social
movements, politics, or current
events into your staff meetings.
Each week during staff meeting,
you or one of your staff could
conduct a professional development activity based on one of these
topics. For example, when Lady
Gaga performed her song "Til It
Happens to You" at the Oscars, we
watched the performance as a staff
and discussed sexual assault and
interpersonal violence on college
and university campuses and at
our own institution.
Include time in your staff meeting agenda for an "In the News"
section. Staff can take this time to
share topics they have heard resi-

dents discussing, topics that they
are particularly passionate about or
interested in, or just general things
they know are occurring in the
world and how they might affect
residents or life on campus.
Residential students and staff are
uniquely situated to be exposed to
diverse ideas and viewpoints. Leaders
should maximize their opportunities
to engage in critical and reflective exchanges about politics, current events,
and social movements. Although we
have many different responsibilities
that we have to attend to, our first
focus should be on educating our
student and staff population about the
world in which we live. With so many
priorities, it is important for supervisors to strike the balance between
discussion of current events and other
important topics. Finding that balance will likely require trial and error.
Additionally, leaders should continue

educating themselves in formal ways,
like listening to podcasts, reading
books, and attending conferences, and
they should also be open to learning
from their students. With the saturation of social media and 24-hour news
cycles, the world is more interconnected than ever. In order to adequately
prepare our students, we cannot be
afraid or too busy to discuss politics,
current events, and social movements
that will affect them long after they
leave the Ivory Tower. 
