"THE FIRST
LGBTQ
CENTER
DIRECTORS
WERE
STREET
ACTIVISTS."
- Ronni Sanlo, former director of
LGBTQ centers at UCLA and the
University of Michigan
While the earliest LGBTQ student
organizations provided a network for
student pride and acceptance, new
organizations would soon form to
serve a greater advocacy role for the

LGBTQ community. The first campus
resource for LGBTQ students, initially
known as the Human Sexuality Office
and later as the Lesbian-Gay Male
Programs Office, was established in
1971 at the University of Michigan in
Ann Arbor. The majority of these centers were established after 2000, and,
now, according to the Consortium
of Higher Education LGBT Resource
Professionals, there are 215 centers
across the United States. Several years
ago, in a conversation with Ronni
Sanlo, she mentioned that the original
LGBTQ campus center directors
were street activists. She deliberately
used that term because colleges and
universities would hire individuals who
were doing community-based LGBTQ
work to coordinate educational efforts regarding LGBTQ programming
and support. Formal training through
student affairs graduate preparation
programs, internships, and assistantships to be an LGBTQ campus center

student affairs professional is a more
recent phenomenon.
Sanlo, along with co-authors Sue
Rankin and Robert Schoenberg in their
book about campus LGBTQ programs,
outline three primary reasons that
higher education institutions created
LGBTQ centers. The first and most
prevalent reason was in response to
incidents of harassment, while the
second was in response to calls from
faculty, students, and staff for the campus to provide a safe place for LGBTQ
students and to increase campus-wide
educational efforts regarding LGBTQ
topics. The third, and least common,
reason was a proactive recognition
that an LGBTQ center could promote
diversity and support a more open and
positive environment. Currently, the
work of LGBTQ campus resource centers ranges from health and wellness
programming and social activities to
individual student advising and educational training for the campus.
